Your Dog’s Super-Powered Hearing – Far Beyond What We Can Detect!
Dogs experience a world of sound that’s completely hidden to us. While humans hear roughly 20–20,000 Hz, most dogs can detect sounds up to around 45,000 Hz — and some sources suggest they may reach even higher. That means your dog can pick up high-pitched noises that are totally silent to you.
It’s not just frequency, either. Dogs can hear quieter sounds, too. Research shows they can detect soft noises that are up to 20–25 dB lower than the quietest sounds we can hear. No wonder they react to things long before we realise anything’s happening.
And distance? In certain conditions, dogs can hear noises four times further away than humans. It varies depending on wind, obstacles, and the type of sound — but it does mean they often know visitors are coming well before you do!
Dogs also rotate their ears independently, giving them a built-in radar system to pinpoint exactly where a sound is coming from. Ear shape, breed, age, and head size all influence how much a dog can hear, which is why some dogs react more than others.
A few examples of what your dog may notice first:
-
A car turning into your road — minutes before it arrives
-
Wildlife rustling in the garden at night
-
High-pitched electronics buzzing (chargers, TVs, appliances)
-
Someone quietly opens the biscuit tin from across the house
-
The jingle of a lead being picked up — even if you swear you didn’t make a sound
