Timing Matters – Reward at the Right Moment!

When we train, what we reward is important, but when we reward is crucial. Dogs learn by making connections, and those connections happen in seconds. A well-timed reward tells them “That thing you just did — do it again!”

Here’s why timing makes all the difference:

  • Dogs live in the moment. If the reward comes too late, they may link it to something completely different — sitting becomes sniffing, staying becomes jumping, and suddenly you’re reinforcing the wrong behaviour without meaning to.
  • Clear communication builds confidence. When your dog understands exactly what earned the treat or toy, training feels easier and more predictable for them. Good timing reduces frustration and boosts learning.
  • Good timing equals faster progress. Whether it’s agility, loose-lead walking, or basic manners, rewarding the exact moment your dog gets it right helps the behaviour stick much more quickly.

Top tip: Mark the behaviour first with a yes, a clicker, or another clear signal, then deliver the reward. The marker buys you time and keeps the message crystal clear.

We use this principle in all our training. From our Puppy and Junior Schools to Scent work, Hoopers, and Agility training, good timing underpins everything we teach. It’s one of the key skills that helps dogs understand the task, enjoy the learning process, and build brilliant habits that last.

Training isn’t just about rewards, it’s about rewarding at the right moment. That’s when real learning happens.
